CEO NVIDIA Jensen Huang provoked a drop in Quantum Computing and other developers’ stocks with his statement at CES 2025 about the prospects of quantum computing.
Huang believes that quantum computers will only become useful in 20 years. The likely prospect of a long wait disappointed investors and led to a drop in the value of several companies’ stocks by more than 40% on Wednesday. Among them are Rigetti Computing (RGTI.O), D-Wave Quantum (QBTS.N), Quantum Computing (QUBT.O), and IonQ (IONQ.N). Together, they lost over $8 billion.
“If you said 15 years… it would probably be early. If you say 30, it would probably be late. But if you chose 20, I think many of us would believe it,” — Jensen Huang sees the prospects of implementing this technology.
The head of NVIDIA is not the only one who holds a similar opinion. Ivana Delevska, chief investment officer at Spear Invest, mentions terms from 15 to 20 years, which “seem very realistic.”
Recently, quantum computing has achieved new successes, as reported by Google. However, the industry is still in its infancy, similar to the 1980s-90s in the development of classical computing.
