Nvidia Chief Architect: «Young programmers should develop 2 key skills — and they will help to outperform AI»

Nvidia Technical Leader Bryce Adelstein Lelbach in a new podcast interview TechBytes (via Business Insider) discussed the hiring processes in the IT industry and the challenges faced by human professionals due to the expansion of AI — and, among other things, outlined the key skills that young programmers need to develop to make their way in a competitive industry.

According to Lelbach, there are two of these skills — math and writing.

«With the emergence of large language models, the ability to communicate your ideas and thoughts will become especially important,», says Lelbach. «And the basics of mathematics, even though people will be programming less in the future, will always be relevant».

Lelbach also noted that it is a «very difficult time for young programmers»:

«We’ve seen a bit of a tech setback after COVID-19 — We’ve seen a lot of tech companies stop hiring. And the reality is that today most large tech companies can afford the luxury of just hiring older people».

Massive layoffs at the height of the pandemic led to a flood of mid- and senior-level programmers into the labor market, who suddenly found themselves competing with junior programmers for positions they had previously been considered overqualified for. Artificial intelligence, according to Lelbach, will also reduce the pool of available jobs.

In general, Nvidia’s chief architect believes that practical knowledge is still the most important, and the best way to hone it is to get an internship.

«If you want to get a job as a software engineer, you need to do an internship almost every year during your college years. If you graduate from a master’s or PhD program without any industry experience, you will be competing with a group of experienced people looking for junior positions».

Earlier, Mike Krieger, the founder of Instagram and now Chief Product Officer at Anthropic, predicted that The work of software engineers will change dramatically in the next three years due to artificial intelligence, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that more than a quarter of the company’s new code is already created by AI.
