Website DOU surveyed 900 Ukrainian video game developers about their salaries, age, location, and game preferences, and based on their answers created a portrait of an average game specialist. In general, this is a 26-year-old Kyiv resident without a wife and children, but with a PlayStation.
The oldest person who took part in the survey is 53 years old, and the youngest is — 18. Almost 40% of respondents are married, but only 20% have children.
More than 80% live in major cities of Ukraine — Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro, and Odesa, and only 5% of developers chose rural areas.
One third of the surveyed game specialists are software engineers, 40% have a middle level, and the most common category of experience is 3-5 years.
C-level specialists have the highest median salary in Ukrainian game development; more than 40% of developers do not have overtime, and 26% receive cash bonuses at work (although 18% are dissatisfied with their remuneration, and almost half have not had a salary review in the last 6 months).
63% work through individual entrepreneurs, while more than 5% of specialists report that they are not registered in any way and receive their salary in an envelope.
The most popular OS among Ukrainian video game developers — Windows, followed by macOS, while only 4% of the surveyed professionals work with Linux. Among the engines, Unity is the most popular, although more than 39% of the surveyed specialists do not work with such tools at all.
More than 80% of developers play video games and most of them choose several platforms for this purpose, while the most popular console is PlayStation (and interestingly, those who choose it have the highest median salary).
