Quentin Tarantino refused to watch both parts of «Dune» Denis Villeneuve on principle.
In a new interview, the director criticized Hollywood’s love of remakes, which was reflected in Denis Villeneuve’s films, which actually restarted David Lynch’s adaptation.
«I have seen Dune (by David Lynch) several times. I don’t need to watch this story again. I don’t want to look at sandworms. I don’t want to watch a movie where they say the word “spice” in such a dramatic way», — Tarantino said in a recent interview (via worldofreel).
Quentin emphasized that the lack of originality is reflected in both movies and television, noting that for some reason remakes have become the biggest hits this year:
«Remake one after another. People ask: “Have you seen Dune? Have you seen Ripley’s? Have you seen Shogun?” And I say: “No, no, no.” There are six or seven books with Ripley’s — why are you making the same one again? I’ve seen this story twice and I didn’t really like it in both versions, so I’m not really interested in seeing it a third time. If you made a different story, it would be interesting enough to try».
The director said almost the same thing about hit series «Shogun», which this year has won many awards and is a favorite among both critics and audiences:
«I watched Shogun in the 80s. I watched all 13 hours. I don’t need to see this story again. I don’t care how they do it. I don’t care if they take me and send me to ancient Japan in a time machine. I don’t care, I’ve seen the story».
Interestingly, in the same interview, Tarantino praised the second «Joker», who had modest box office receipts й even worse reviews from the audience, noting Todd Phillips’ directorial work and calling Joaquin Phoenix’s performance «one of the best he’s ever seen».
