Quentin Tarantino talks about his new movie, his children and the state of contemporary cinema

What will Quentin Tarantino be filming — one of the main movie intrigues of recent times. However, unlike his fans, the director is more absorbed in fatherhood and does not like contemporary cinema.

At the Sundance Film Festival, in a conversation with film critic Elvis Mitchell, Tarantino said little about the film, but gave a few hints. The first of them is not very encouraging for the audience: the director is in no hurry to make the movie. He quickly moved from the topic of cinema to family life.

«I’m not in a hurry to start producing. I have been doing this for 30 years. Next month my son turns 5, and I [still have] a daughter who is two and a half years old. When I’m in America, I write. When I’m in Israel? I’m aba, which means dad»,” Tarantino says.

The director gives an approximate timeframe for when he will be ready to start creating. It also has to do with children — Tarantino wants his son to understand his work at least a little bit.

«The idea of going on a trip while they are too young to understand it does not appeal to me. I want to not make any movie until my son is at least 6 years old. That way, he will know what is happening, he will be there, and it will remain in his memory for the rest of his life,» the director explains, noting that his younger daughter «is already such a genius [that] she will just understand it.

However, Quentin Tarantino seems to be unable to live without creativity, and in this city you can hear more about the movie.

«If you’re wondering what I’m doing right now, I’m writing a play, and that will probably be the next thing I do. If it fails, I probably won’t turn it into a movie. But if it’s a smash hit? It might be my last movie».

Moreover, the director speaks passionately about how theater seems more attractive than cinema nowadays (quoted by Variety):

«That’s a big fucking deal pulling [a play] off, and I don’t know if I can. So here we go. That’s a challenge, a genuine challenge, but making movies? Well, what the fuck is a movie now? What — something that plays in theaters for a token release for four fucking weeks? All right, and by the second week you can watch it on television. I didn’t get into all this for diminishing returns. I mean, it was bad enough in ’97. It was bad enough in 2019, and that was the last fucking year of movies. That was a shit deal, as far as I was concerned, the fact that it’s gotten drastically worse? And that it’s just it’s a show pony exercise. Now the theatrical release, you know, and then like yeah, in two weeks, you can watch it on this [streamer] and that one. Okay. Theater? You can’t do that. It’s the final frontier».

At this point, the audience burst into applause.
