They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but it seems not in the case of Disney’s «Snow White» remake.
The film debuted with a global box office of $87.3 million, with $43 million coming from «domestic» theaters — which is significantly below forecasts for a film that cost $270 million. The opening of «Snow White» virtually duplicates the lackluster debut of «Dumbo» ($46 million) and lags far behind «The Little Mermaid» ($95.5 million), «The Witch» / «Maleficent» ($69.4 million) and «Cinderella» ($67.8 million), according to data from Deadline.
On the positive side, the remake has a somewhat better result than other controversial films, and in particular «Joker 2»which opened with $37.6 million at homebut in the final it barely broke the $200 million mark globally (this is actually its production budget).
To recap critics gave «Snow White» a B+ on CinemaScore and 44% on Rotten Tomatoes, while IMDb was is forced to hide the rating after it dropped to 2.3 out of 10. It looks like a targeted review bombing, because on the same Rotten Tomatoes user rating is currently 74%
«Snow White» — is a reimagining of the classic 1937 Disney animated film from director Mark Webb («500 Days of Summer», «The Amazing Spider-Man»). Rachel Zegler plays the eponymous princess who is forced to travel to the forest after her stepmother, the evil queen (Gal Gadot), seizes control of her parents’ kingdom. Snow White meets the seven dwarfs, and together they come up with a plan to reclaim her domain.
Controversy surrounded the film from the beginning of production: fans did not appreciate the choice of a Colombian actress for the lead role, and then her statements added to the problems. Zegler claimed that she did not like the original film, called the prince «a stalker», and demonstrated a pro-Palestinian position, which also provoked rumors of a conflict with her co-star Gal Gadot, who is Israeli and served in the army.
In fact, if we forget about all the scandals surrounding the film and evaluate it solely from an artistic point of view, it seems to have turned out to be an ordinary «average». ITC.ua movie reviewer Denys Fedoruk gave the remake of «Snow White» 5 out of 10 points:
«The new Snow White movie has caused a lot of hype, but it’s completely unfounded — there’s simply nothing to hate or, conversely, to admire. This is the average temperature for Disney, so the movie’s reaction deserves a corresponding».
