Renault decided to play on the nostalgic feelings of drivers and announced the revival of the Renault 5 Turbo, but in an electric version. The new product, called the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, is not a concept car, as the original R5 Turbo 3E was. Renault has confirmed that this truly «hot» hatchback will appear on the roads as a production model. The announcement was made in a rather unconventional way – like an Easter egg at the end of the fourth episode of «Anatomy of a Comeback», a documentary series about Renault’s recent resurgence.
The Renault 5 Turbo 3E draws inspiration from its iconic predecessors, the Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2 from the 1980s, but with a modern, all-electric interpretation. While it pays homage to the past with its retro-futuristic design and motorsport-inspired livery, the electric vehicle is packed with the latest technology. The modern version of the classic is equipped with two powerful electric motors that provide a combined output of over 500 hp. With this kind of power in a fairly compact body, we should expect exciting performance, and Renault promises 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds.
The car’s design is a combination of old and new. The charging socket integrated into one of the rear air intakes is a reference to the styling of the original «Turbo». The use of a carbon fiber superstructure reduces weight and increases rigidity, which is crucial for a car that promises to be a true «pocket rocket». And yes, like its legendary ancestor, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E will be rear-wheel drive.
While the documentary gives a glimpse of this exciting new model, Renault is keeping some details under wraps for now. The price, battery capacity, and range are not yet known, but the company has promised a series of exclusive events in 2025 that will further reveal the characteristics of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E.
The presentation of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E in the documentary may seem unusual, but it fits well with the unique character of the car and the story of its creation. It’s a story of heritage, innovation and the company’s determination to reclaim its position in the automotive world. With the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, Renault is not so much reviving a legend as electrifying it for a new generation.
