Rockstar fell in love with mods, GTA 6 will have Roblox-style user content, — insiders

Published by Margarita Yuzyak

It seems Rockstar has decided to change its attitude towards mods and GTA 6 will be much more flexible towards them. Report Digiday claims that the studio has involved the creators of Roblox and Fortnite in the development.

The rumors coincide with the report GTA Focal about Rockstar’s idea to make GTA 6 similar to GTA Online with user mods. The successes of Fortnite and Roblox encouraged the studio not to reject user-generated content (UGC). The company has its own example — GTA Online has become so successful that the developers canceled DLC to one-fifth.

In GTA 6, it seems that players will be able to launch their own game modes, create mods without the risk of deletion, attract third-party brands, and monetize their creations. Roblox has many successful mods like creating houses, ships, raising animals, etc., and Fortnite has held events with Billy Eilish, Eminem and Travis Scott that attracted millions of users online at the same time.

Large-scale changes to GTA Online would be a huge step for Rockstar, which usually limits modifications. In 2015, the studio banned the creators of the popular FiveM mod from its Rockstar Social Club to crack down on cheaters and prevent piracy. Rockstar began to reconsider its policy in 2023 when it acquired Cfx.re, the developers of FiveM (GTA 5) and RedM (Red Dead Redemption 2) mods. Although the same year, Take-Two removed a mod for GTA 5 that added AI to the characters in the game.

Rockstar did not comment on plans for user mods in GTA 6. However, the GTA Focal report, rumors about the involvement of Roblox/Fortnite creators, and the acquisition of a modding team increase the chances that gamers will change the spaces of modern Vice City. Developers expect the game to be a huge success in the first year of release, and already invested up to $2 billion in the development of GTA 6.
