The Geekbench 6 benchmarking database has published the results of testing the new RTX 5080 laptop graphics card. This is the first confirmed benchmark for the GPU RTX 50 series for laptops. The test was conducted on the Alienware 18 Area-51 laptop presented at CES 2025. Probably, the test was conducted right at the exhibition after installing the test program.
Although Geekbench 6 is rarely used to evaluate GPU performance, the test results allow us to compare the RTX 5080 with other models. The RTX 5080 for laptops scored 190326 points in the OpenCL test. The graphics card is equipped with 16 GB of video memory and has 60 compute modules (SM). Each module typically contains 128 CUDA cores, for a total of 7680 CUDA cores.
These figures put the RTX 5080 between the RTX 5070 (48 SM, 12 GB of memory) and RTX 5070 Ti (70 SM, 16 GB of memory) desktop graphics cards. The RTX 5080 likely uses the same GB203-300 graphics chip as the RTX 5070 Ti.
In the OpenCL benchmark, the RTX 5080 outperformed the top mobile graphics card of the previous generation, the RTX 4090, which scored 179426 points. In addition, it outperformed the desktop AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX (187818 points). Interestingly, the new product is only slightly behind the RTX 3080 Ti desktop graphics card, which scored 191,482 points.
The results demonstrate the significant progress of mobile GPUs. However, the actual performance will depend on the TGP (Total Graphics Power) and cooling system provided by the laptop manufacturer. Until the official release of these laptops, scheduled for March 2025, graphics drivers are likely to continue to improve, allowing you to get the most out of the hardware.
Despite the impressive specs, the price of a laptop with RTX 5080 is around $2200. This price makes these laptops unaffordable for the average gamer, despite the advanced GPU capabilities.
