GSC Game World founder Sergey Grigorovich gave an interview YouTube channel «Straight red»in which he talked about the financial success of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, plans for the game’s film adaptation and the development of new «Cossacks».
«I don’t know how many millions of copies we’ve sold, but we’ve already paid off. It’s an adrenaline rush. You just watch the numbers grow to the point of ‘wow’»,” Grigorovich said, adding that the game paid for itself on the first day of sales.
We would like to remind you that GSC Game World reported that the game sold 1 million copies on the second day after its release.
«I knew we would break even on the first day. The expectations were serious. Not only mine, but also those of those who know the industry. There is a company that counts all this as».
At the same time, Grigorovich did not specify the exact amount of earnings, nor the cost of development. According to the founder of the NAVI esports team, Oleksandr Kokhanovskyi, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 could cost $30-60 million, while Smok Ventures investment partner Tomasz Koscielniak, who focuses on investments in gaming, noted that We are talking about a budget of about $100 million.
«When Microsoft saw that the number of views of our trailer was higher than Halo’s, they realized everything. That we had to have something in common with these guys,», — adds Grigorovich.
The founder of GSC Game World also explained once again why the game’s development took 10 years.
«At that time, the name with the prefix “2” would have been a deception. We didn’t pull out by technology. Years passed, the market grew by 30% each time, and the time came when we took someone else’s technology in its entirety, the Unreal engine, and spent almost 6 years developing», — says Grigorovich. «I was tired, we didn’t have a project with a big step forward, and we had to endure» for a while.
The interview also touched upon the potential adaptation of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.
«The movie is very much a play. But what should it be like? Cinematography is a very complicated thing. Making a movie is no easier than making a game. The level should be appropriate».
At the same time, Grigorovich noted that games can live longer than movies, receiving updates, citing the following as examples «Cossacks», which are still on sale, and also touched upon the topic of the potential continuation of the game — this will be discussed only after the resolution of «certain legal issues».
The founder of GSC himself, by the way, hasn’t played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 yet, which one of the hosts ironically pointed out: «Waiting for a patch?».
«The stars must align», — Grigorovich replied.
