Samsung to unveil XR glasses at Unpacked event in January – pictures only

Published by Vadym Karpus

Samsung has long been rumored to be working on XR glasses, and a new piece of information from Korea suggests that a prototype will be unveiled during the Galaxy S25 series launch in January.

However, the glasses will not be ready for immediate sale. Moreover, even the prototypes will not be available for testing or viewing at the event — they will only be shown in the form of videos or images.

It looks more like a teaser, similar to the Galaxy Ring presented at Unpacked in January this year. The smart ring was fully announced only in July.

According to information from industry representatives, the final version of XR glasses will be released in the third quarter of next year, i.e. from July to September. So, it seems that Samsung is repeating its strategy of launching new categories of devices.

The XR glasses will reportedly weigh only 50 grams and look like regular glasses. They will have a payment function (somehow), use artificial intelligence (expectedly), and support both face recognition (probably for payment) and gesture recognition (for navigation in the user interface). The glasses have been developed in partnership with Google and Qualcomm since February 2023.

Before the official show, the company plans to first announce the launch of the software platform for XR, which should happen by the end of this month.

What are XR glasses?

XR (Extended Reality) glasses are augmented reality glasses. These are special devices that are worn on the head and allow you to immerse yourself in interactive virtual worlds or supplement the real world with digital content.

What technologies does XR include?

  • Virtual reality (VR): Immerses the user in a completely artificial world, creating the effect of presence.
  • Augmented reality (AR): Adds digital elements to the real world, such as games, instructions, or virtual objects.
  • Mixed reality (MR): Combines elements of VR and AR, allowing you to interact with virtual objects in the real world.
