HBO shared new details about the upcoming Harry Potter series.

At the Max Showcase exhibition in London, showrunner Francesca Gardner revealed that over 32,000 children have auditioned for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and noted that the adult characters in the series will be portrayed younger than in the films to “adhere to Rowling’s canon”—specifically mentioning the Dursley family and Severus Snape, who was only 31 years old in the first book.

Director and executive producer of the series, Mark Mylod (“Game of Thrones”), meanwhile added that he will “delve into every nook and cranny of Hogwarts” to detail the show.

HBO head Casey Bloys, in turn, announced the start date for filming (summer of 2025) and returned to the topic of collaborating with J.K. Rowling, who is often criticized for her comments on transgender people on social media. Bloys emphasized that the “team is completely comfortable working with the original material’s author” and said he would rather “do what the creators want” than “listen to fan conversations.” It was previously revealed that HBO offered actor

Paapa Essiedu (“I May Destroy You”) to play Snape, and Mark Rylance — Albus Dumbledore. Interestingly, before this, interest in playing the Hogwarts headmaster was expressed by Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black in the films, and Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort), suggested that Cillian Murphy would be well-suited for his role in the series.

The first season of the Harry Potter series is set to debut in 2027.
