Sid Meier’s Civilization VII: the first reviews on Metacritic turned out to be the worst for the entire series

Reviewers of some foreign resources have already had the opportunity to evaluate the new strategy of Sid Meier’s Civilization VII. Their reviews are available on Metacritic.

Critics’ reviews of Sid Meier’s Civilization VII were contradictory. Some praise the game for its new approaches, while others do not recognize the spirit of «Civilization» in the new game at all.

«Civilization VII is exactly the kind of Civilization we need right now – deep and complex, but with an emphasis on human drama and achievement rather than the movement of faceless units through a mathematical matrix»,” praises the game Guardian, giving it the maximum 100 points.

«Civilization VII is a bold, feature-rich reimagining of the series, full of personality and stunning detail. While some problems remain, Firaxis has created a remarkable strategy game that is impossible to put down – once you get hooked, you’ll be eager to play another turn» – GINX TV picks up on this, but lowers the score to 90.

«Overall acceptable, but with a few bad decisions and a striking lack of originality», – says Eurogamer, giving a low score of 40 points.

«In Civilization 7, the desire to simplify and optimize this legendary 4X series seems to have gone a little too far, especially when it comes to the interface. It is painfully inadequate in providing me with the information I need to play successfully, or even to understand what is sometimes going on. That said, there are improvements to war and diplomacy, a bit of narrative flavor, and mostly great graphics and sound, so it can still keep me hitting “one more turn” well past midnight. There’s every reason to believe that with Firaxis’ usual pace of patches and expansions, it will be able to refine its new ideas and become everything it should be, and while what’s here now is at least still interesting, it’s also a bigger step back for the series than we’re used to seeing when a new era comes along»,” IGN sadly states, giving the game a 70.

Overall, based on 68 critic reviews, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII has an average score of 80. This is the worst result in the series. For example, the previous sixth installment, which had the lowest score in the series, had a score of 88. All previous installments were rated 90 and above on Metacritic.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will be released on February 11, 2025.
