Owners of some of the not-so-new Samsung Galaxy smartphones have begun to complain en masse about a problem with the display. It is called the green line» problem.

As the name implies, it appears as a thin green line. It is placed vertically on the screen, disrupts the normal operation of the screen and potentially interferes with the phone’s operation. This problem seems to primarily affect Galaxy S21 series phones, with the Galaxy S21 Ultra and S21 FE models being mentioned most often.

Some users seem to have discovered the green line by accident, while others attribute it to a software update or heavy use, such as during gaming sessions. One X/Twitter user reported that he noticed the line immediately after installing a software update on his Galaxy S21 FE. Another experienced it after installing the April patch on his Galaxy S21 Ultra (model number SMG998B).

The exact cause of the green line issue remains unknown. It could be a software glitch, which is usually fixed with a simple reboot or factory reset. The fact that the problem persists for some users indicates a potential hardware defect.

In this case, the most likely cause of the problem is a faulty display connector or flex cable. These internal components connect the display to the main board of the phone, and any damage or loosening of these components can lead to display malfunctions.

The fact that the problem often appears after a smartphone software update also has an explanation. It’s likely that software updates combined with environmental factors can generate enough heat (especially on phones with Samsung Exynos chipsets) to cause or accelerate a pre-existing hardware defect in the display. Some have speculated that this heat could weaken the glue that holds the display components together, leading to the green bar issue. However, this theory is not conclusive, as intense workloads such as gaming also generate a significant amount of heat, but are less likely to cause the problem.

Over the past year, the green bar problem has also affected older smartphones with AMOLED displays from other manufacturers. OnePlus, in response to similar complaints, began offering its customers in India a lifetime screen warranty.

Although Samsung has not yet officially acknowledged the issue, the company has offered repairs and replacements for similar problems previously experienced by Galaxy S20 users.
