New PSP from Sony «is in the early stages of development».
Sony is developing a new handheld console that will be able to play PlayStation 5 games. According to data from Bloomberg, the release of this device is likely «many years away».
«According to sources close to the development, the product’s goal is to expand Sony’s presence in the market and compete with Nintendo for a share of the handheld gaming devices market,» Bloomberg writes.
The concept may be based on the recently released PlayStation Portal — a portable console that can stream PS5 games via the cloud, but is not able to play them directly on the device.
The release of such a portable PlayStation could compete with both the future successor to Nintendo Switch and a possible similar device from Xbox.
Earlier this month, Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed that Microsoft is working on prototypes of portable gaming devices, but their possible release is still several years away.
In a conversation with Bloomberg, Spencer said that Microsoft is working on prototypes and considering different options. He tasked the development team with analyzing the market and forming a strategy based on research. According to him, the release of any device is still several years away.
