Sony is on the way to AI in games, so it chose one of its most famous characters — Aloy from Horizon to test.
An internal video leaked on YouTube shows an AI version of the main character Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. The video disappeared after a copyright complaint, but journalists The Verge managed to examine it and described what happened there. Meanwhile, we found this video on the Internet.
In the leak, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Director of Development Sharvin Ragobardajal communicated with Ala using voice prompts. The algorithms recognized speech using OpenAI Whisper. But the character’s responses were generated by GPT-4 and Llama 3. Aloy’s voice and face were created using Sony’s proprietary Emotional Voice Synthesis (EVS) and Mockingbird technologies.
The conversation began quite routinely:
Next, the tester asked Aloy about her travels in the Horizon universe. And although the answers were correct from the lore’s perspective, the voice sounded rather mechanical, and the animation looked… well, let’s say «wooden».
Aloy was also asked how the search for her mother was going. She knows about her ancestry — Aloy is a clone of the scientist Elizabeth Sobeck. Then she was asked what it was like to be a clone, and she answered something like: «Being a clone feels unique, connecting me to the past while allowing me to create my own path and future».
The video looked more like an experiment created in collaboration with Guerrilla Games studio (authors of Horizon). So far, Sony has not confirmed that this technology will appear in future games. However, one thing is clear: the company is seriously exploring the possibilities of AI for game characters. At least Sony doesn’t make voice actors work on their upcoming releases like EA does.
Although, the question still remains: what will happen to voice actors in general? In the video, the voice of Aloy did not belong to actress Ashley Burch. In the video, the voice sounded «axe», but the situation may change with the development of technology. The same applies to the future of game dev because Microsoft has already announced Muse AI that will be used to create games.
So far, AI Scarlet looks more like an interesting experiment than a revolution. But if Sony continues to develop the technology, who knows? Perhaps in future projects, they will reduce the number of voice actors or create a model so that the player can have natural conversations with NPCs, as modders did in Skyrim.
