During the main keynote at CES 2025, the head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash and the president of Screen Gems Ashley Brooks announced that they will continue their joint work on movie adaptations of games after The Last of Us, Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal, and Uncharted.
Next in line — the adaptation of last year’s gaming hit Helldivers 2 (in the works at Sony Pictures) and a movie based on Horizon Zero Dawn (Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions). The latter title is in “early stages of development” and will tell the origin story of the main heroine, robot hunter Aloy, in a post-apocalyptic world. Previously, Netflix had attempted to turn Horizon Zero Dawn into a series, but something went wrong.
Helldivers 2 is the fastest-selling game in history (12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks). Currently, the game is reviving after the release of the long-awaited Illuminate update, which added a third faction.
It was also announced that Crunchyroll and Aniplex are joining forces to create an anime series based on Ghost of Tsushima. Recall that a “live-action” movie based on the game is also in the works.
Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world adventure game about samurais set in feudal Japan. It was hugely successful after launching on PlayStation 4 in 2020, then on PlayStation 5 a year later, and on PC in 2024. Across all platforms, Ghost of Tsushima has sold over 13 million copies.
