Sony patented a PlayStation controller with a button «to rewind the game»

A recent Sony patent describes a future PlayStation with a separate Save State button. For emulator users, this mode will remind them of the function of saving and loading the state.

Instead of configuring the return function with key bindings, as on emulators, or with a button combination, as on the Switch, Sony plans to implement a dedicated button for this function — probably near the D-Pad.

«The user can enter the rewind mode from a live game using one or more controller inputs to review a recent game (e.g., rewind and fast forward, playback, etc.) and then return to the game».

At one time, the 2003 game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube featured a Sands of Time mechanic that allowed players to change time to undo unpleasant situations. It is likely that a similar feature will work not in all games.

Of course, in multiplayer games, you can’t rewind anything because of the synchronization of states between players and the server. Such a special button could be used only in solo games, and even there the idea is questionable and can ruin the gaming experience. However, in most games, save and load are used for this purpose without a button.
