Sony / Until Dawn / Ella Rubin
Screams, rewinds, and a new chance to die — Sony has presented the second trailer for Until Dawn. The adaptation of the popular 2015 game tells the story of a group of friends who find themselves in a nice-looking abandoned cabin in the woods and are constantly becoming victims of brutal murders.
The trailer for the film, directed by David F. Sandberg («Annabelle: Creation»), makes it impossible to forget two things — the background phrases «Stuck in time»/«We’re here again» and the hourglass. The constant rewinding of time hints to the viewer that each death of a character affects their fate. The horrible (but not final) end of the characters should become clues to solving the mystery of how to get out of their personal hell.
The approach is similar to the plot of the original game, where the player’s decisions influenced the fate of other characters and how many of them would survive to the end unlike the game in the adaptation, the characters are reborn, not leave the «party» for good. The film will also feature wendigos, who are shown in several shots.
In the trailer, Peter Stormare («Prison Break» and «Fargo») this time seems to play not Dr. Alan J. Hill from the original game, but a mysterious guide. He has led a group of «winners in life» to a mountain house where they have a limited time before they learn a new way to die. The characters have only one thing to do — through blood and tears, to overcome the riddle and live to see the dawn.
Sony has mixed several types of horror in the two Until Dawn trailers. They contain hints of slasher, monsters, body horror, and a filming style similar to that of «Paranormal Activity». The first trailer the viewer was shown more conversations between characters, locations, etc., and in the second one there was blood, meat, killing and sandlot times (they really take about 20 seconds of screen time).
The gaming giant has had mixed success with video game adaptations, The Last of Us was very popular with the audience and Uncharted did not become a global hit. At the same time, Sony is working on films Helldivers 2, Horizon Zero Dawn and the anime series Ghost of Tsushima. It’s too early to tell how the movie will turn out, but the comments have already been filled with jokes: «I can’t believe we’re getting a Dead by Daylight movie before the real Dead by Daylight movie has a script».
The cast includes Ella Rubin (Anora), Michael Cimino («I Never Was»), Ji Yong Yu («The Expendables»), Odesa Ayon («Ghosts») and Maya Mitchell («Good Trouble»). The world premiere of Until Dawn is scheduled for April 25.
