Space company Axiom Space and fashion house Prada presented the design of the new AxEMU spacesuit at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan. This equipment was developed for NASA’s Artemis III mission, which aims to return humans to the moon in 2026.
The new spacesuit will be made of white insulating material. It will protect astronauts from extreme temperatures in different parts of the Moon and protect them from lunar dust.
AxEMU is equipped with advanced technologies for a comfortable stay in outer space. Astronauts will be able to work outside the spacecraft for up to eight hours. The spacesuit has an advanced diagnostic system, a carbon dioxide purification mechanism, and a helmet with an extended view.
Axiom Space engineers have conducted numerous tests of AxEMU, including underwater, to ensure its reliability and functionality.
The Artemis III mission involves sending four astronauts to the south pole of the Moon. The expedition will last for 30 days, during which the crew will conduct scientific research and experiments on the surface of the Earth’s satellite. It is planned that this will be the first landing of astronauts on the Moon’s surface since the «Apollo» program, which ended in 1972.
