James Gunn’s «Superman»: who are all these people in the trailer

Published by Andrii Rusanov

To someone unfamiliar with Superman comics, James Gunn’s new movie trailer might look like a complete and confusing flicker. Variety explains who all these people are.

Most know Superman himself and his alter ego Clark Kent, his girlfriend Lois Lane, his adoptive parents Jonathan and Martha Kent, and the classic villain Lex Luthor. But the trailer is packed with heroes that movie-goers are seeing for the first time. Comics tell their stories.

Krypto / trailer

Krypto

Even before, Superman’s dog had viewers puzzled. Krypto also has superpowers and surprises no one in the comic world. During the film’s production, James Gunn was inspired by his own recently “adopted” shelter dog Ozzie, making the film’s hero look like him.

Guy Gardner / “Superman” trailer

Guy Gardner

Nathan Fillion (“Castle,” “Firefly”) plays a member of the “Green Lanterns” with a distinctive red hairstyle, Guy Gardner. As a member of the galactic space police, Guy can fly and create constructs from green light using his ring. He’s known for his arrogance and confidence. Fillion is also expected to reprise his role in the HBO series “Lanterns.”

Hawk Girl / “Superman” trailer

Hawk Girl

Isabela Merced (“Stranger: Romul,” “Madame Web”) plays the winged superheroine Hawk Girl. Several women have donned the Hawk Girl mantle and gained large bird wings and a metal mace. Actor Aldis Hodge previously played the male version, Hawkman, in “Black Adam.”

Mr. Terrific / “Superman” trailer

Mr. Terrific

Edi Gathegi (“For All Mankind,” “The Blacklist”) plays Mr. Terrific, one of the smartest people on the planet and a skilled inventor. He wears a T-shaped mask on his face and uses various high-tech gadgets.

Metamorpho / “Superman” trailer

Metamorpho

Anthony Carrigan will play Metamorpho, who can transform his body into different things. In the comics, Metamorpho can stretch like rubber, transform into a liquid or gas, and gain the hardness of stone. Carrigan previously played a villain in the series “Gotham.”

Stagg Industries / “Superman” trailer

Stagg Industries

Stagg Industries — another mega-corporation run by billionaire antagonist Superman Simon Stagg. In the comics, Simon’s daughter Sapphire falls in love with Rex Mason (played by Anthony Carrigan), whom Simon turns into the disfigured Metamorpho.

Possible Kelex / “Superman” trailer

Kelex

Superman is quite emotional standing over a destroyed robot — probably Kelex from the comics. Kelex was a servant droid from Krypton and later becomes the caretaker of Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, a polar hideout. Its destruction would sever one of the hero’s last ties to his home planet.

Fight with a monster

Bonus: monster

It’s unclear if the giant fire-breathing monster Superman fights in the trailer is a nod to the comics. It might be one of his first major battles as a superhero.
