Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the famous game franchises Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Pikmin and others, objected when he was called a genius.

Miyamoto’s genius called is a Nintendo investor. He asked how the company would develop the 71-year-old creator’s creativity and methods when he eventually retires. The game designer denied this «title»: he said that new Nintendo employees often called him «surprisingly normal», which he agrees with.

«I think I am a pretty ordinary person. If possible, I would prefer not to work at all, but if I am going to work, I want to do it as efficiently as possible. I’m always thinking about how to make what I’m working on a hit — if I make a hit, it will make my next job easier. I talk about these creative dilemmas every year at a seminar [for new employees],» Miyamoto says.

At the same time, Miyamoto spoke about these seminars. They reflect his own game development philosophy. It was ideas like this that led Miyamoto to develop some of the most beloved games of all time, such as Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario 64, and many others.

«Among the game developers who have just joined Nintendo, there are many who often play games themselves. They would like to create a better version of the last game they played. However, I explain to them that that’s not what game design is about. It’s about looking at things around you and combining aspects that you think would be interesting in a video game».

Nintendo is now on the verge of announcement of the new Switchwhich Shigeru Miyamoto took an active part in creating. Little is known about the console, but Nintendo has confirmed that it is backwards compatible with Switch games.
