Tesla’s controversial electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck, has faced yet another problem. The additional «Range Extender, which was supposed to significantly increase the vehicle’s autonomy, has been postponed. Moreover, it will now provide less additional range than originally promised.
When Tesla first announced the Cybertruck in 2019, it advertised a three-engine version with a range of more than 805 km. Unfortunately, when the company finally announced the official specifications, the three-engine Cybertruck had a starting price of $100 thousand and a range of only 515 km. To solve the range problems, Tesla announced the «range extender, which adds an additional battery pack to the pickup truck’s body.
Initially, Tesla claimed that this Range Extender would increase the range of the Cybertruck with two engines from 547 km to over 756 km, and the range of the Cybertruck with three engines — from 515 km to over 708 km. Now that’s all changed, and the company has lowered those numbers.
The «range extender» will now provide approximately 708 km of range for the two-engine Cybertruck, which is 40 km less than the original estimate. The range of the three-engine version with the range extender remains unchanged at 708 km with standard tires, but is reduced to 668 km with off-road tires.
In addition, Tesla has postponed the release date of the «range extender from early 2025 to mid-2025. And it won’t be cheap. The Range Extender is expected to cost $16 thousand, and it must be installed (and subsequently dismantled) at a Tesla service center.
