Tesla has officially launched a new version of its Model Y electric car in North America and Europe. This happened shortly after the launch in China earlier this month.
Interestingly, Tesla is now accepting orders for both the old and new versions of its most popular electric crossover. This is a unique case for Tesla. The company has never done this before.
As part of the launch of the new Model Y in North America and Europe, Tesla has just added a new «configuration» in the Model Y online configurator for the New Model Y Launch Series. It is actually the version introduced in China about two weeks ago. Although only the new version is currently offered in China.
Tesla estimates that the new version will have a range of 320 miles (515 km) on the EPA cycle. For comparison, the previous version of the Model Y Long Range AWD offered up to 311 miles (500 km).
Other updates to the New Model Y include improved heated and ventilated seats, an additional 8-inch display for second-row passengers, second-generation suspension and sound insulation, an additional front camera, more audio system speakers, updated connectivity hardware, automatic trunk opening, a more premium interior, and an improved climate control system.
All these improvements will come at a price. The new Model Y Launch Series costs $59999, which is $12,000 more than the previous Model Y Long Range AWD, which is still available.
Tesla has prepared special badges for the Launch Series. Currently, Tesla offers the new Model Y only in Stealth Gray, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Ultra Red, and Quicksilver colors, which are included in the Launch Series price.
The first deliveries of the new Model Y version will begin in March.
