The head of Black Myth: Wukong prepared a speech for «Game of the Year» 2 years ago, and the choice of Astro Bot brought the developers to tears

The CEO of Chinese studio Game Science, which developed Black Myth: Wukong, Feng Ji, has expressed his disappointment with this year’s The Game Awards ceremony.

“The games nominated this year were awesome… but I really didn’t get the criteria for this year’s ‘Game of the Year’… it felt like I came here for nothing!”, Ji wrote on the social network Weibo.

He also added that he had prepared an acceptance speech for Black Myth: Wukong as “Game of the Year” two years ago:

“Actually, I wrote my speech for the ‘Game of the Year’ award ceremony two years ago — just to never have the chance to deliver it… When you are so confident in yourself, but don’t get the recognition you expected, it’s natural to feel upset.”

Let’s recall that this year the title of “Game of the Year” went to Astro Bot, while Black Myth: Wukong was recognized as the “Best Action Game” and received the “Player’s Voice” award.

The development team, as well as the studio head, also took the loss in the main category quite emotionally.

“The Black Myth: Wukong team, I don’t know who in the team, cried when Astro Bot received the GOTY award”, wrote Alana Pierce, a scriptwriter and writer.

Astro Bot was indeed a serious contender for victory, however, many gamers argued that Black Myth was “more revolutionary” — and moreover, it was the first Chinese game nominated at The Game Awards. Meanwhile, the role-playing action game by Game Science received some of the lowest ratings in the history for the “Game of the Year” nomination.
