Warner Bros.’ fantastic animated movie “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” made its debut in international theaters this weekend, pulling in a modest $2 million from 31 countries (including Ukraine). The top earners were Spain ($347K), Mexico ($239K), and Thailand ($146K).
The movie “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” based on characters by J.R.R. Tolkien, takes place 183 years before Peter Jackson’s trilogy and centers on the story of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary king of Rohan, who is attacked by Wulf—a cunning and ruthless ruler of Dunland, seeking vengeance for his father’s death.
Despite its modest debut, critics rated Warner Bros.’ animated creation fairly well.
“‘The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim’ is a bold experiment that proves Tolkien’s world can evolve and find new forms. The film impresses with its scale, emotional depth, and modern approach to the classic tale,” wrote ITC film critic Denis Fedoruk in his review.
Meanwhile, “Moana 2,” has raked in about $600 million worldwide in just two weeks of release—currently making it the sixth highest-grossing film of 2024. For comparison, the first “Moana” earned almost the same amount over its entire theatrical run ($643 million).
Universal’s musical “Wicked” has grossed over $400 million, while “Gladiator II” from Paramount has hit $368.4 million globally (Ridley Scott’s production budget was $250 million, with at least another $100 million spent on marketing).
The action comedy “Red One” starring Dwayne Johnson continues to earn the title of “biggest flop of the year”—so far, the movie has collected $164 million worldwide against a production budget of $250 million, not including marketing expenses.
