After the favorable first reactions to the Minecraft movie adaptation it seemed that the film was going to get high marks from critics, but they were quite disappointing.
Presently, the film has a modest 52% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 46 reviews. Critics call the plot ridiculous and intended exclusively for children (or very avid gamers), but praise the duo of Jack Black and Jason Momoa, who have demonstrated successful comedic performances.
Similar sentiments are demonstrated by the rating on IMDb, which was 6.2/10 based on 1.5 thousand reviews, as well as a score on Metacritic, which did not exceed 50 points out of a total of 100.
Minecraft is based on the game of the same name, developed and published by Mojang Studios in 2011, and tells the story of a group of misfits (Jason Momoa, Daniel Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen) who suddenly find themselves in a game world and have to complete a series of tasks to save it and get home. Accompanying them in this is the character Steve, played by Jack Black (although he used to play the role of a talking pig).
The Minecraft movie will be released in Ukrainian cinemas starting today, April 3.
Interestingly, despite the dubious ratings, experts call the movie «a potential gold mine» for Warner Bros.and forecasts a worldwide box office opening of $140 million.
