«The Mummy» returns with a remake, but without Brendan Fraser — who will play the main role?

Published by Margarita Yuzyak

The «The Mummy» franchise is coming to life once again, this time by New Line Cinema.

Lee Cronin, the author of «Rise of the Evil Dead», is directing the reboot. Filming has already started in Ireland and Spain, and Jack Raynor is among the first confirmed actors. But there is a caveat: his role is still being kept secret, and he is definitely not the main character. So the intrigue remains.

Fans of the original «Mummy» 1999 immediately ask: will Brendan Fraser return as Rick O’Connell? The actor himself does not mind, but on one condition. In an interview with Variety he said:

«I don’t know how it would work. But I would be open to it if someone came up with the right arrogance»,” he said.

That is, it all depends on whether the script will match the spirit of his «Mummy». It was the adventure style with humor that made that version a cult one, and if Cronin keeps this tone, the chances of Frasier’s return will increase. As for Tom Cruise, the situation is more complicated. His «Mummy» (2017) failed, and the actor himself received a lot of criticism. So it’s not a given that he will want to make the same mistakes a second time.

What do you know about the new version?

Unlike the previous installments, this movie is not affiliated with Universal Pictures, which has owned the rights to «The Mummy» for many years. This means that Cronin’s team is not limited by the previous films and can create a completely new story.

The plot is still a secret, but judging by the director’s choice, we can expect a mix of horror and adventure. His film «Rise of the Evil Dead» received positive reviews precisely because of its combination of suspense and bloody action. If he takes a similar approach, it could be an interesting interpretation.

The project is being created by Jason Blum and James Wan, who are well versed in horror films. So perhaps the new «Mummy» will not only be about adventures and archaeologists, but will also add more scary moments.

The film is tentatively scheduled for release on April 17, 2026. We are currently waiting for details about the cast and plot.

But for now, the main question is: will this movie be closer to Frasier’s The Mummy, which balanced adventure and humor, or more like Cruise’s darker version? If Cronin finds the right tone, this could be a real revival of the franchise or another failed remake.
