With the release of the second season, the «Andor» series surpassed all «Star Wars» projects according to critics.
Currently, the second season has almost perfect 99% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 75 reviews — only 3% more than the first, but it made the series the highest-rated «Star Wars» project among critics. It should be noted that we’re talking about «live-action» Star Wars movies or series, as several animated projects, such as «The Clone Wars» or «Rebels», have 100%.
«Andor» — is a prequel series from the Star Wars universe, leading up to the events of the movie «Rogue One. Star Wars. The Story» (2016), which tells the story of a group of rebels who steal plans to create weapons of mass destruction for the Empire. The protagonist here is the eponymous character of Diego Luna — once a petty thief, and eventually a rebel hero.
«In its second season, Andor establishes itself as the gold standard for what modern Star Wars can be», — from the review Variety (More reviews can be found at here).
The showrunner of the series is Tony Gilroy, who in a recent interview noted that «Andor» ishis «by far the best work». Earlier, he also boldly stated that the show’s success could force Disney «to expand its horizons» and take on previously untouched concepts in the Star Wars universe —like horror movies or sitcoms.
Interestingly, high ratings — is not the only record «Andor». Disney spent more than $645 million on the series (the second season last year cost $290 million to shoot, but the final amount may be much higher), so the series actually surpassed «The Last Jedi» and became the most expensive project in the «Star Wars universe». If we take into account the total cost of television, the leaders are still «Rings of power» from Prime Video with a first season budget of $465 million.
Starting April 22, the second season of «Andoru» is available on Disney+ — the first chapter is available for viewing, the remaining three (3 episodes each) will be released weekly until May 13 inclusive.
