Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, spoke about the original plan for his character’s image — and it turned out to be very different from what we eventually saw on the screen.
Lucius — is a minor antagonist, Draco Malfoy’s father and one of the Deathly Hallows (a union of dark wizards, which included Voldemort’s associates), first introduced in «Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets» in 2002. In the films, the character had long white hair and dressed like the wealthy elite of the wizarding world, although this idea of the image was very different from the original plans.
According to Isaacs, the sketches depicted Lucius as a man in a simple striped suit with brown hair. The actor himself didn’t like it too much, so he immediately went to the makeup artists with complaints.
«I went to the makeup department and said that I was hoping for a wig, and they told me that Dumbledore already had one and asked why I wanted it. I told them I didn’t want Muggle hair, I wanted hair like my son’s».
Then Isaacs took the necessary wig to show himself to the director, and later made the designers change the character’s clothes as well.
«They say: “We bought you a businessman’s outfit.” I asked why and said that I was hoping to wear fur and velvet. He is a rich aristocrat and would never want to dress like a Muggle».
Then the actor went to the set, where Chris Columbus was directing a scene with Pixie and Gilderoy Lockhart.
«He turned and asked, “What is that on your head? Have you seen the sketches?” I said: “I saw them, they’re great, but I was thinking of long blond hair.” Columbus replied: “That’s right. And what’s this curtain?” (about the costume). I said: “Imagine it’s something like a velvet cape or a cape with a fur lining.” He’s like: “Okay, is there anything else?” and I asked for a walking stick with a magic wand in it».
Undoubtedly, the cast was one of the main reasons why the Harry Potter movies became a favorite for many, and their characters and the way they look like characters also played a role here. So here again, the question arises as to the success of the upcoming adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books as a TV series — the previous casting announcements have already caused a wave of controversy, particularly in terms of selection of an actor for the role of Severus Snape.
As for the main child roles, it was reported that 32,000 children took part in the castingalthough the results have not yet been announced. The first season of the Harry Potter series is to debut in 2027.
