The long-awaited second season of “Squid Game” has become the biggest launch in Netflix history, breaking the record of its predecessor, but it has faced some criticism from viewers.
This article contains spoilers for the second season of “Squid Game”.
Currently, on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel scores a modest 64%, with criticism particularly aimed at the creators for limiting the season to just seven episodes, the small number of games, and the open-ended finale. Meanwhile, the season’s cliffhanger ending
“My first reaction to the ending was: ‘How could you end the season at this point?’. I think some viewers might have been really pissed and actually even cursed us for it,” the actor commented to Entertainment Weekly. “But I realized that today many people actually love bold cliffhangers.”
Remember that in the final moments of the second season, when the rebellion against the game organizers failed, Gi-hun’s friend Cho Be was killed right before the hero’s eyes, and the frontman put on his mask again after having posed as one of the contestants throughout the season.
“For Gi-hun, it was probably a huge shock,” says Lee. “He might feel a bit lost and not know what to do next, or maybe he’ll become even more angry and vengeful. I think viewers will also be interested to see how Gi-hun appears in the third season.”
The third season of “Squid Game” will be released on Netflix in 2025—some leaks mentioned an exact date (June 27), but the streaming service officially spoke only of late summer to fall. Among other rumors accompanying the continuation, there was even talk of a potential appearance of Leonardo DiCaprio in the cast, but this statement has yet to be confirmed.
Recently, Netflix released a short teaser trailer for the third season, showing another killer doll with the caption: “Say hello to Cheol-su. ‘Squid Game 3’ is coming in 2025.”
