Skyrim director Bruce Nesmith says that Baldur’s Gate 3 will not change Elder Scrolls 6, as Todd Howard has his own vision for the game. You should look at the sixth «Scrolls» through the fifth.
Former Bethesda developer Bruce Nesmith doesn’t see the possibility that The Elder Scrolls 6 will abandon Skyrim’s minimalist interface and return to heavier designs, given the popularity of more technical games such as Baldur’s Gate 3. Skyrim made a significant departure from Bethesda’s traditional RPG format when it overhauled the characterization and interface of the Elder Scrolls series and abandoned many elements.
Given the development of role-playing games, Baldur’s Gate 3 — is largely a return to classic board mechanics. The game was an unqualified and great success, but Nesmith doesn’t think Elder Scrolls 6 will take anything from it.
«I don’t think [the success of Baldur’s Gate 3] necessarily portends a complete shift back to more numbers and more complex character menus and so on. I don’t know if the rest of the industry will follow suit. I’m not smart enough to say this, but I think, because of Skyrim, that Bethesda would like to see the game get off its own track,» Nesmith said.
«You see it everywhere in Skyrim. Todd [Howard] is a big proponent of making the UI disappear unless you’re doing something that requires visibility. So all you see is the world around you. That’s all you see. You just see the world»,” the developer continues.
Bruce Nesmith is a true RPG legend, having worked as Creative Director for the original D&D publisher TSR, before moving into PC game development in 1995 to create The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall. He later became a senior game designer at Bethesda and had a significant impact on The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and Skyrim. He left the studio in 2021, so he probably isn’t too familiar with The Elder Scrolls 6but he is still an authoritative figure in RPG.
