«Star Wars» has never played with genres, and neither has the Marvel franchise, which is also owned by Disney, but showrunner «Andor» Tony Gilroy is confident that this will not be the case for long.
Gilroy believes that the success of his series could force Disney «to expand its horizons» and take on previously untouched concepts in the Star Wars universe — such as horror films or sitcoms.
«I think we’ve come a long way with Andor, just like the Core Team has come a long way,» Tony says in an interview with SFX (via Games Radar). «And there is hope that now we can do whatever we want. I always dreamed that my show would open a new path — for a Star Wars sitcom or a horror movie».
Gilroy added that he had discussed various concepts with Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy.
«The first thing I said to Katie when she suggested expanding the line: “Would you like to do a courtroom drama?” And why not? We’ve worked very hard on Andor, and now it’s up to other people to — find another way».
The second season of «Andor» will debut on Disney+ on April 22 and will consist of four chapters (3 episodes each), which will be released weekly for a month.
«Andor» — is a Star Wars prequel series that leads up to the events of the movie «Rogue One. Star Wars. The Story» (2016), which tells the story of a heroic group of rebels who steal plans to create weapons of mass destruction for the Empire. The protagonist of «Andor» is the eponymous petty thief (Diego Luna), who eventually turns into a rebel hero.
In addition to Luna, the series stars Stellan Skashgård (Luthen Rael), Genevieve O’Reilly (Mon Mothma), Denise Gough (Dedra Miro), Kyle Soller (Cyril Carn), Adrienne Archona (Bix Kalin), and others. The trailer for the second season also introduced newcomers: Ben Mendelsohn and Alan Tudyk, who reprise their roles from «Rogue One» — as Imperial officer Orson Krennic and reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO, respectively.
