Netflix has agreed to a limited release of the upcoming film from the “Chronicles of Narnia” series, directed by “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig.

According to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos (via Puck), “The Chronicles of Narnia” will debut on 1000 Imax screens on Thanksgiving Day 2026, while streaming of the film will be available four weeks later, closer to Christmas. Initially, the theatrical release is planned for two weeks, but depending on demand, it might be extended and also released not only in Imax.

Currently, it is not clear whether Gerwig will remake one of the previous films or has chosen a story by Clive Lewis that has not been adapted before. There were speculations online that it might be “The Magician’s Nephew,” which is essentially a prequel to “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and tells the story of a boy named Digory and his friend Polly, who witness the creation of Narnia by Aslan.

At the same time, the first announced actor seems to contradict these rumors. 21-year-old British actor Louis Partridge, known to Netflix viewers for his role as Viscount Tewksbury in “Enola Holmes 2,” is unlikely to be age-appropriate for the role of Digory, and since he was announced first in the cast, he most likely has landed a leading role.

The story of Narnia has been adapted multiple times: it started with the 1979 animated series and continued with the more well-known to contemporary audiences trilogy of “live” films from 2005-2010, which earned a total of $1.5 billion in box office revenue. A fourth film, which would have adapted “The Silver Chair,” was also planned but was canceled due to the loss of rights.

Regarding Gerwig’s work on the series, the director has signed a contract for at least two films (out of a total of seven stories in the “Chronicles of Narnia”).
