One of the most popular Apple TV+ series, “Severance,” will have at least three seasons — the second debuts this Friday, while the third is already “in the works,” according to director and executive producer Ben Stiller.
As for the overall number of seasons, Stiller does not provide exact figures, stating that “the story will continue as long as it makes sense,” though he cautiously clarifies that there are no plans to drag the show out.
“Apple has always supported us and never demanded a continuation just because the show is successful,” Stiller said in an interview with Collider. “The series will continue as long as the story continues. We have an idea that we are working on as we start work on the third season.”
Stiller himself definitely knows where the story is headed, as he mentioned in an interview with The New York Times that the series already has a finale and a specific number of seasons. When asked to hint at how the show will end, he responded:
“The series has always been about Mark, his intro and his wife, as well as the final destination for both of them.”
Earlier, “Severance” showrunner Dan Erickson hinted that the third season will come “sooner than expected” (there was a three-year gap between the first and second seasons), as the production process is now well established.
“Severance” is a science-fiction series (with elements of comedy) about employees of the technology corporation Lumon Industries, who agreed to a surgical procedure called “severance” that separated their work memories from their home ones and effectively created two personalities in one body. Intros (those at work) have no idea whether they have families outside or other details, and extras (those outside) accordingly are unaware of what happens to them at work. The first season, remember, ended with a group of employees from the macrodata processing department led by Mark Scout secretly awakening their intros in their bodies outside work.
The main roles in the series are played by Adam Scott, Tramell Tillman, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette.
The second season, which will consist of 10 episodes (one more than the first), is expected on Apple TV+ on January 17th. Remember, critics who previewed the continuation gave it a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
