The first official trailer for «Rust» — an indie western starring Alec Baldwin that began with a real-life tragedy, has been released.
«Rust» tells the story of Lucas McCallister — a teenager who accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to death. His grandfather Garland Rust (Alec Baldwin) rescues his grandson from prison. The relatives then flee together across the desert in an attempt to get away from U.S. Marshal Wood Helm and a ruthless bounty hunter nicknamed «Preacher».
The trailer shows all the classic elements of the western: horses, dusty roads, gunfights and a tough world. The colors of the upcoming movie are well described by the name — «Rust», which is classic for Wild West films.
The first trailer was released more than three years after Baldwin accidentally shot Ukrainian cameraman Halyna Hutchins during the production of the film. It turned out that the prop gun was loaded.
«I believe that some things in this life cannot be undone», — says the actor in the trailer, which echoes real-life events.
The filming process was delayed due to the tragic events of October 22, 2021. Baldwin was rehearsing a scene, pointing a gun at the camera when the weapon unexpectedly fired. A bullet fatally wounded cameraman Galina Hutchins and hit director Joel Souza.
An investigation into the incident showed that the weapon was supposed to be without live ammunition, but something went wrong. In 2023, charges against Baldwin were dropped, but the gunman, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter — she was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Also, it is accused of alcohol and drug abuse. Assistant director David Halls, who was supposed to check the weapons, got off with a six-month suspended sentence.
After two years of trials, work on «Rust» resumed in 2023 to complete filming in Montana. As a result, the scene during the rehearsal of which the unintentional murder took place was cut from the final version, the People. They decided to rewrite the script after filming resumed.
The film has already been presented at the Polish film festival Camerimage, where it was screened in honor of Halyna Hutchins. Her name was mentioned in the credits along with the cinematographer Bianca Kline, who helped complete the film. The official release in theaters is scheduled for May 2025.
