Game Director of The Witcher 4, Sebastian Kalemba, drew some interesting parallels between The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2077 regarding character builds and game creation.
“I think the gameplay [in Cyberpunk 2077] was more diverse [than in The Witcher 3]. It offered more freedom when it came to creating characters and the ability to experience battles in your own way. This is definitely something we want to take as a lesson [into ‘The Witcher 4’],” says Kalemba.
He also mentions that Ciri tends to follow her heart more than Geralt, which contributes to the additional flexibility that CDPR wants to offer the player in character creation and progression:
“We want to allow players to try to define her. Unlike Geralt, who was an experienced monster hunter throughout the entire Witcher saga, Ciri is just starting her career. This means players can create their own version of her… she will shape her own ‘code’ on her own terms.”
In the trailer, Ciri uses several types of magic: drawing energy from water, forming an electric discharge, enchanting a chain with something akin to fire magic. Moreover, she apparently wears a medallion of the Lynx School, as some fans assure. Varieties of magic and Witcher schools, as well as diverse weaponry like the chain, could indeed create the necessary variety.
However, taking a cue from Cyberpunk 2077, the developers aim to avoid the mistakes of that game, especially those that led to its disastrous launch. They say that the production process has been radically changed and has become more controlled.
“We are very meticulous in defining the stages of production. We are very careful to cover this, making sure that the foundation is there. In this way, we feel that we control this complex environment more than we did before. And it also makes everyone feel more secure when it comes to the overall daily development,” says Sebastian Kalemba.
Developers explain that clear communication, meeting expectations, and a healthy working environment are key factors for creating a reliable product at launch.
