The trailer for «The Naked Gun» — a reboot of the famous comedy with a new Frank Drebin, now played by Liam Neeson, has been released.
The new hero is Frank Drebin Jr, the son of the same fool of a cop and the father of the franchise, Leslie Nielsen. And, judging by the trailer, he’s also not really in the know about what’s going on. But that doesn’t stop him from killing criminals and talking complete nonsense with a straight face.
Traditionally, it all starts with a banal bank robbery, the police surrounding him and… a child? Some girl with a lollipop ignores the fence and just walks into the bank. The robber asks her what she wants, and she says: «Your ass». In a second, the girl takes off her mask, magically becomes taller and a grown man, and the lollipop turns into a weapon. At the end of the trailer, we saw Liam in polka-dot underpants, in a school uniform and with a pathetic pose, like in classic action movies.
The film is directed by Akiva Shaffer, a well-known member of the band «The Lonely Island». Seth MacFarlane, the creator of the cult animated series «Family Guy», and Erica Huggins are responsible for the production. So you can expect a hefty dose of creativity and absurd humor.
The first film of the franchise «The Naked Gun» was released in 1988, where Leslie Nielsen, in the image of a funny and clumsy crime fighter, collected a real downpour of absurd situations. The film became a real hit, earning $140 million at the box office and receiving two sequels: «The Naked Gun ½: The Scent of Fear» in 1991 and «The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Last Stand» in 1994.
However, after that, the franchise disappeared, although Paramount was looking for ways to revive it for a long time. In 2013, there were even plans to create a new version starring Ed Helms, but the project never came to fruition.
And now it’s — official: the premiere of the new «Naked Gun» part will take place on August 1. Also, Liam Neeson ends his career in action movies after 15 years of filming in this genre.
