The network showed how Until Dawn for PS3 could look like if it were in the first person.
Supermassive Games has come a long way to Until Dawn’s release in 2015. Now we have an opportunity to see what one of the first versions of the game would look like. Moreover, it’s not just screenshots or a few minutes of gameplay — it’s a full play through of the unpublished Until Dawn prototype for PlayStation 3. The video showed that this is a wholly different experience than the one that PS4 owners eventually got.
The game in this collection has a first-person perspective and supports PlayStation Move — motion controllers similar to the Wii Remote. Gamers would have to literally wave their hands to interact with objects, and a gesture system was used instead of traditional controls. This mechanic never made it to the final version, as the developers decided to redesign the game completely for PS4, making it a third-person adventure horror.
The published video demonstrates a complete play through of the early version of the game, which consists of 16 chapters. The plot is generally similar: the same characters, the same hut in the mountains, the same Wendigo. However, there are significant differences, and here are the ones:
Interestingly, the game still allowed walkthroughs without PlayStation Move, although it was initially thought that motion controllers would be mandatory. This may explain why the studio eventually abandoned this mechanic — not all gamers had a PlayStation Move, and its integration in a large game was quite inconvenient. Besides, not everyone is a fan of moving around during the game.
So far, the prototype is limited to watching a walkthrough posted on YouTube by Digital Preservation. It is currently unknown whether it will be possible to download and play Until Dawn on your own.
In light of the recent closure of the Ballistic Moon studio which worked on the remake of Until Dawn, this video became a kind of journey into the history of the series. Supermassive Games is now focused on The Dark Pictures Anthology, but fans are already discussing that they could have gotten a wholly different horror if the game had remained in this format.
