The beta version of Telegram for Android has a new feature that allows you to make group calls with up to 100 participants at once. Another change concerns the payment for messages.
The new video call option is being tested in version 11.9.1. You can invite up to 100 participants to such a call. If it is allowed in the privacy settings, other users will also be able to add new people to the conversation. To create a call, go to the «Calls» section, click Start New Call, and then Create Call Link. After that, a link in the format t.me/call will appear, which you can copy and send to several people at once using the Share button.
Calls support end-to-end encryption (E2E). Participants can turn on or off the microphone and camera, as well as broadcast video from the camera. In other words, the functionality is as close as possible to what other popular group meeting platforms offer. For example, Signal allows you to connect up to 50 people, and Zoom offers webinars for one million simultaneous participants for a huge amount of money.
Another change concerns Premium users — Telegram is testing a paid incoming message feature. Subscribed users will be able to determine whether to allow messages from those who are not in their contacts — and how much it will cost. This should reduce the load on the «Inbox» folder or even help monetize it.
Telegram is also introducing the ability to «mark messages with asterisks» — this feature will work both in private chats and in groups or channel discussions. It can be used as an indicator of importance or a reaction to a message.
Previously Telegram becomes the second most popular messenger in the world — 1 billion monthly active users. The platform remains the main network through which Ukrainians watch the news — about 73% of them. And at the same time, Pavel Durov returned to Dubai after almost six months in France, where he was charged 12 charges related to the work of the messenger (dissemination of materials of sexual abuse of children and promotion of terrorism).
