Warner Bros. plans to revive at least two 1980s blockbusters — currently in the “development” stage is the movie “Gremlins 3”, and a reboot of the adventure comedy “The Goonies” is also planned.
According to Deadline, the screenwriter of the original films, Chris Columbus, will return to at least one project (“Gremlins”), but details have not yet been disclosed.
The “Gremlins” franchise is getting a new life again — over 25+ years since the debut of two film versions released in 1984 and 1990, last year on Max debuted the animated prequel series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai,” which tells the story of young Sam Wing (the first owner of Gizmo).
Regarding “Gremlins 3”, the film has been in development since the 2010s with Columbus “on board”, but had not received updates until today.
The adventure comedy “The Goonies” debuted in 1985 and tells the story of a group of children who accidentally find a pirate treasure map and try to locate the treasure to use the money to buy back their own homes in an area that is being resettled.
It is currently unclear — whether the film will be a sequel or a remake. However, the original cast seems interested in returning. In September 2024, Sean Astin, who played Mikey Walsh in “The Goonies” posted on X with a call: “Our time has come. Come on, Steven!” (Steven Spielberg produced the film and wrote the screenplay in collaboration with Columbus). Besides Astin, the film also starred Josh Brolin, Jonathan Ke Quan, and Corey Feldman (the latter, by the way, was involved in the first “Gremlins”).
