Web coder for $12,000 — does this offer sound tempting? A startup offers a job as an IT specialist, but instead of easy work, it’s like being a fly in the ointment.
If you don’t follow IT trends, then web coding is a new approach to programming. It is based on the use of large language models (LLMs) and AI to generate code. Instead of traditional writing — AI creates the appropriate program code.
Moving on to the job posting that has been actively discussed by the IT community, — it was posted on Djinni. The beginning sounds tempting: remote work from Ukraine, FullStack, knowledge of Ukrainian, a test task, and one year of experience. The most interesting thing is not even the salary, but the fact that the candidate is asked to be «5-10 times faster than an ordinary developer. And also fully autonomous in solving technical problems together with artificial intelligence.
The vacancy was published by Clevervol, a corporate startup that, according to its own words, belongs to the Ukrainian media agency Deadline. The authors of the description stated that now 50% of their code is written by AI. To do this, they need a «powerful web coder» who does not care about experience or education.
The description states that the developer should:
Before the interview, there is a mandatory test task: to implement a feature in the oppsource using AI without access to the code, only a description. The candidate chooses the repository. Moreover, there is no need to sign an NDA. But without the completed test, the resume will not even be considered, and payment is promised only after the contract is signed.
The IT community in LinkedIn did not ignore this vacancy. In short, the comments are overwhelming with emotion, and if not, read on.
«”Each team member will get a share… but you have to send them 500 bucks to prove that you are serious about being a future employee?”» — jokes Senior Frontend Developer Ruslan Kolibabchuk.
AI/ML Data Scientist Engineer Vasyl Savka directly called it «scam», and also suggested that the test — scam is of Ukrainian origin. And Backend Engineer Nikolai Nosov suggested that the test is individual for each candidate, hinting at potential exploitation.
Oksana L. suggested that such tasks could hide malware that gives access to accounts and wallets. Artur Shevchenko from Yalantis has previously spoken about similar schemes — North Korean hackers are particularly active in this regard, disguising viruses as GitHub tasks.
«It smells to me like a wild straightforward scam on human greed», — adds Junior Java Developer Yevhen Popadyuk.
Aleksey Bogdanov, an IT expert, says that creating projects without experience exclusively with AI, spending 14-15 hours a day — «you have to be Roger Rabbit in the Matrix».
At the time of publication, the job posting received 116 views and 9 responses. Strangely enough (and quite expectedly), IT people are in no hurry to become «10 times faster than» themselves. So to speak, «web coding» hasn’t lured people with its name. They say that despite the fact that you can write code without a deep technical background, — is not just a time-saver, but a complete change in the approach to development.
