You just don’t need it: Apple explains the lack of MagSafe in the iPhone 16e by the unpopularity of wireless charging

Published by Andrii Rusanov

An Apple representative said that the target audience iPhone 16e charges phones exclusively with a cable. I wonder why MagSafe is in other iPhones, though — is the audience so different?

Wireless charging is available in the iPhone 16e, but the lack of MagSafe means that Apple’s latest $600 phone only charges the battery with 7.5W, which significantly increases the time. By unlike the iPhone 16e, other models The current line supports MagSafe and can charge batteries with a capacity of up to 25 W.

«According to Apple, most of the people in the 16e’s target audience charge their phones exclusively by plugging in a charging cable. They generally don’t use inductive charging at all, and when they do, they wouldn’t care if the 16e was stuck with a low Qi charging speed of 7.5W, while the latest, more expensive iPhones charge at 15 or even 25W via MagSafe,» says John Gruber from Daring Fireball.

Previously Apple denies speculation that new C1 5G modem will interfere with MagSafe — but did not specify the reason for the lack of technology. Many assumed that the reason for the company’s decision was marketing, which the new statement confirms to some extent.

Of course, Apple has been studying its audience more carefully. But the author of the news knows true fans of wireless charging, for whom its low speed is a critical drawback. Especially in a «budget» smartphone for $600.
