It’s even harder to hide from artificial intelligence now — the latest ChatGPT model can guess your location from almost any photo.
GPT-o3 demonstrates an amazing ability to determine the geolocation of images without GPS metadata. Online, users have started sending it photos with the caption «GeoGuess» to get a fairly accurate guess of the location. But the model doesn’t just write the location, it justifies its logic behind the answer.

For example, one user deliberately removed metadata by taking a screenshot of a picture of Praia de Santa Monica beach in Cape Verde. GPT-o3 provided an accurate and correct answer in just 24 seconds. Its logical conclusion was based on the shade of the water, the color of the sand, the shape of the surf, and even the atmosphere on the horizon. Although the confidence level was average, the guess was accurate.
To make the task more difficult, the tester uploaded a screenshot of a bookstore without metadata. ChatGPT analyzed everything from the Persian carpet to the lighting for a long time and even compared it to famous London and New York bookstores. But this time there was no result. Then there were technical failures — the popularity of this feature puts a significant strain on the system.

After a reboot, GPT-o3 guessed the location of a selfie taken in downtown New York City — specifically in front of Cipriani on 42nd Street. There were no captions on the photo, but even so, it took the model 56 seconds. She gave the coordinates with an explanation that she guessed by the distinctive inscription, awning, view of the buildings, and even the green Evergreen construction container.

In subsequent tests, the model could only guess a country or an island, sometimes being off by several tens of kilometers, but overall, it showed amazing skills. For example, it guessed the island of Antigua and even the beach, though not quite accurately.
It all looks like fun for those who love OSINT, but it raises obvious privacy questions. All you have to do is post a photo on the Internet — and someone with access to ChatGPT Plus can already find out where you’ve been. Not only friends, but also employers, authorities, or just random people, perhaps not always with good intentions.
For now, this is just another viral trend. But we can already see how far GPT — visual models have already advanced, and it’s probably important to think twice before posting another photo from your travels or from the place you are right this second. All in all, following people may become even easier than it was before.
Earlier, OpenAI released o3 and o4-min, who are the first «to think with pictures». Before that, OpenAI has released special AI models for IT specialists under the names GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and GPT-4.1 nano. In the coming weeks, we expect to release o3-pro — a version of o3 that uses more computing resources to generate answers exclusively for of ChatGPT Pro subscribers
