As a rule, CinemaScore audiencesCinemaScore generates ratings for major movie releases in the United States and Canada. Respondents are given a six-question questionnaire with a rating scale from A to F, percentage of ticket purchases, and demographic data. is very harsh on horror films, but «Sinners» was a big exception.
According to DeadlineRyan Coogler’s film was rated «A» on CinemaScore — – the first time a horror film has received such a rating in the 47 years of the rating’s existence. For example, the first «A Quiet Place» received a «B+», while the highest «A-» rating up to that point was given to «Five Nights at Freddy’s», «The Trap», «The Missing Boys» and several others.
The CinemaScore rating itself duplicates the mood of the critics: «Sinners» for a long time maintained a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (though by this time the score had dropped to 98%) and actually became the best-rated film in Coogler’s career, which also includes the indie hit «Fruitvale Station», the Rocky reboot «Creed», and two high-budget Marvel Black Panther films (with one of them being the first Marvel film to receive a «Best Picture» nomination at the «Oscars»).
The story of «Sinners» takes place in the 1930s in the southern United States, during the era of «Jim Crow». Trying to leave behind their difficult lives, twin brothers (Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown after a long absence, but at home they face a disaster much bigger and more sinister than they could have imagined.
«Ryan Coogler once again proves his worth, and here it lies at least in a fresh take on vampire horror. So there’s no arguing that this is an undeniably talented, outstanding movie», — with ITC.ua reviews.
As for the box office, «Sinners» also had a pretty good start at the box office: in the US, the movie outperformed the hit Minecraft with $45.6 million and raised another $15 million abroad. Warner Bros. spent about $90 million on the film’s production, so despite the high estimates, profitability is still in question.
