Review of the portable air conditioner Ariston Mobis 9: an almost perfect partner for a hot summer

The heat is rising, and so is the electricity shortage. However, if you have already decided to use or buy an air conditioner, then pay attention to the portable model Ariston Mobis 9. It definitely has its advantages compared to classic air conditioners, but this segment also has disadvantages, features, and nuances that you need to know before making a final decision. We tested the Ariston Mobis 9 for several weeks and now share our experience.

Packaging and equipment

Ariston Mobis 9 comes in a large box in the brand’s red and white colors.

Inside, we see the mobile air conditioner itself, a corrugation for heat dissipation, a sealant, two panels for installing the corrugation in windows, several fasteners for connecting the corrugation to the air conditioner and to windows, documentation and instructions, and a control panel with two AAA batteries.

They also sent me a separate window seal for mobile air conditioners that fits our windows. It’s almost as if it’s not included in the package, so you’ll have to buy it separately. There are many types and shapes of them with different price tags, so it depends on what you like best.

Design and ergonomics

The Ariston Mobis 9 looks like a large air purifier. It’s a rectangular «tower» on four plastic wheels with dimensions of 355×703×345 mm and a weight of 24.7 kg.

The body is made of glossy plastic, and the top platform is matte. It has an LED screen, LED indicators, and four control buttons.

On the front of the portable air conditioner, we see the Ariston inscription and the grilles through which cold air is blown. On the left side is a handle for easy movement of the air conditioner. On the right side there is another handle and detailed technical information about the device.

On the back, we can see several holes covered with lids. They need to be opened periodically to drain the air conditioner waste. There are also heat dissipation grilles and several air filters.

The Ariston Mobis 9 is relatively heavy, but this is offset by the wheels and handles. It is very easy to roll, and even if you have thresholds, it can be dragged over them to another room or space without any problems. If you take the corrugation that needs to be connected at the back, then, of course, the overall size of the structure increases, but it is still quite compact and easily placed near the window.

The white glossy plastic does not show any dust or other signs of use. Therefore, there will be a minimum of problems with the appearance and care.

Features and capabilities of Ariston Mobis 9

The Ariston Mobis 9 has a cooling capacity of 9000 BTU, and its effective cooling area is 18 square meters. The EER coefficient (the ratio of the air conditioner’s effective operating capacity in cooling mode to electricity consumption) is 2.6. This is a kind of standard in this segment, but it is certainly lower than that of conventional air conditioners.

The power consumption of the model is 1200 W, with a maximum of 2300 W. The refrigerant type here is R290, and there are antibacterial, antiallergenic, and deodorizing (carbon) filters.

The minimum temperature in the cooling mode is 17 degrees, and the maximum temperature is — 35 degrees. In addition to cooling, there is also a dehumidifying mode and ventilation.

The Ariston Mobis 9 has the remote control mentioned above, and it is a familiar model for anyone with air conditioners. It has a screen and physical control buttons, some of which are duplicated on the body of the air conditioner itself, and some are only on the remote control. For example, you can use it to set a timer, activate sleep mode, night mode, etc.

Remote control

Ariston Mobis 9 has a standard remote control. All modern stationary and portable air conditioners have this. It has an LED screen for displaying information and round silicone buttons for control. Two AAA batteries power the remote control.

The remote is compact and convenient, the buttons are soft and pressed very smoothly. The case is matte plastic, but on the front panel it is something like glass gloss. Or maybe it’s real glass. In any case, although there is no dust or traces of use on it, there will definitely be scratches.

Experience of using Ariston Mobis 9

As you may have already understood, Ariston Mobis 9 — is a portable air conditioner, which means that all cooling, heat removal, motors, and other mechanisms are located in one case. On the one hand, this is a plus because we have a relatively compact box that can be taken with us, easily moved around the room, etc. On the other hand, it makes more noise, requires more power, and has certain installation nuances.

I emphasize that these are nuances because literally anyone can pull the corrugation out the window, and there is no need to call a team to install air conditioners. So, one person holds the other’s legs while the latter hangs in the window and installs the second part of the air conditioner with the refrigerant and motor.

Let’s start with the pros. As I said, a portable air conditioner — it’s simple and compact. I unpacked the box, took out the air conditioner, connected the corrugation to it from behind, put it out the window, turned it on, and it works. If you want to move the device to another room or kitchen, you can do the same.

This option will greatly simplify the lives of people who live in rented apartments, and there are a lot of them now, and whose landlord or landlady does not allow them to install a conventional air conditioner. It is also an option for small businesses or offices, which also have various problems with installing standard models. It can be an ice cream or hot dog stand, for example, or a small office with one or two rooms.

Now for the nuances. And they are in the same pulling of the corrugation out the window. As I wrote above, the kit contains only a sealing tape, but there is no full-fledged kit for closing the hole of an open window. Therefore, you either need to buy it separately or use it without it. I was sent a separate set for review, but there are many of them, they are different, some need to be glued to the windows, others come with rubber fasteners. In short, there are many options.

When used without any seals, hot air, of course, enters through the window opening where the corrugation sticks out. But in fact, this is not essential and, judging by my experience, has little effect on cooling. The air conditioner cools the room without any problems and is not hindered by the slightly open window. Of course, with a seal, it will be more efficient and faster, but whether it is worth buying this additional piece and attaching it is up to each individual to decide.

It is also necessary to periodically open the holes on the back of the air conditioner and put some containers to let various waste elements, water, etc. come out. However, in a few weeks of use, I opened these things twice for several hours. The first time nothing leaked out at all, and the second time it dripped for ten seconds and that was it. That is, nothing serious or complicated.

Now for the cons. Like other mobile air conditioners, Ariston Mobis 9 is significantly noisier than conventional models. Officially, the noise level is set at 52/47.5 dB. This is about right, and during active cooling even more, but it is definitely not quiet. To make it clear, it buzzes, somewhere like a PC at medium-high load. That is, it doesn’t seem to interfere, but you won’t be able to sleep with it, and it’s not exactly quiet work either. At least compared to conventional air conditioners.

The second important disadvantage is that a portable air conditioner consumes more electricity. This was important even before the shortage after the shelling, but now it is even more important. Moreover, conventional air conditioners «consume» a lot of energy, but mobile ones take even more. I always had at least 1.2 kW, often 1.5 kW or more. For example, my regular air conditioner takes at least 500 watts, and the maximum I remember is 1 kW. The average is 700 watts.

So, the main question is — is everything okay with cooling? Yes, everything is fine. Ariston Mobis 9 is designed for an area of 18 square meters. I used it to cool my balcony office and the room next to it, and it’s a total of 12.5 square meters. It coped with this area without any problems and even blew normally into the living room, which is another room.

Of course, it won’t completely cover my 42.2-meter apartment, but neither will a conventional air conditioner because the layout is such that there are corner rooms that are difficult to reach from other rooms. But, in general, the model can definitely cope with the declared area, so there is no doubt about it.

I also note that I used the buttons on the case much more often than the remote control. Because they are there, and they are right next to each other. And the remote control was usually lying around somewhere, as it always does. You moved the air conditioner or put it where you needed it. I pressed the power button on the case, selected the mode and temperature, and that’s it. Convenient and no need to look for the remote control.

Prices and competitors

Ariston Mobis 9 is sold at a price of UAH 12,900. It’s not cheap, but it’s not expensive either, especially if we compare it to other portable models This and other air conditioners from the list appear and disappear from the market. Probably because of the serious excitement in this heat.

You can start with a slightly simpler model Ariston Mobis 8. It costs 11,900, is absolutely identical to the model in the review, but is designed for an area of 16 square meters. Among the competitors are WetAir WPAC-E07K, Cooper&Hunter CH-M09K6S , but it is designed for an area of 26 m², Beko BP 207C and Cooper&Hunter CH-M08MC.
