Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 headphones review: new sound in an old case

Today we review a new, fourth version of the popular audiophile wireless headphones Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless. We will consider in detail the features of the novelty, its innovations, sound and tell about the experience of using it for several weeks as the main headphones.

Packaging and equipment

The headphones come in a rectangular cardboard box with colorful printing in light colors of the brand. Every year, Sennheiser Momentum TWS packages are getting smaller, which is not a bad thing in itself, but the cardboard is also getting thinner, which makes the device’s packaging less weighty, in every sense. The kit consists of the following components:

• USB-C charging cable
• set of ear cushions (XS, S, M and L)
• set of fasteners (S, M and L)

The accessories are packaged in thin paper envelopes, which is a great alternative to plastic, given the environmental friendliness of the material. The wire is traditionally short, but it’s enough for charging.

Replaceable inserts for additional attachments, made of the same tactilely pleasant silicone as the ear cushions. They are fixed on the headphones with a small recess in the case, which allows you not to worry about them moving sideways during use.

Design and ergonomics of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4

The new Momentum TWS 4 is visually similar to last year’s, but now it uses metallic-colored faceplates.

These are small and easy-to-use headphones without a leg that fit most users perfectly. The cases are made of a pleasant to the touch matte plastic, and the covers have a textured surface.

The case is covered with a pleasant to the touch fabric, with a logo on the top cover and one indicator on the front panel. The fabric is not a very practical solution, but the headphones are maximally recognizable and look like an expensive and high-quality accessory.

There are 3 colors to choose from: Black Graphite, White Silver and Black Copper.

Sennheiser Momentum TWS 4 fit well in the ears and are comfortable to use. Additionally, the model’s ergonomics are improved by interchangeable earbuds, which can be considered sporty, as the headphones do not fall out even when running, jumping, or moving your head.

Connection and control

When you first connect and then change the source, simply hold your fingers on the covers of both headphones simultaneously for a few seconds, after which they enter pairing mode. The Sennheiser Momentum TWS 4 is as seamlessly connected as the previous versions.

Sound Zone

When setting up the Sound Zone, the user selects the headphone settings by type of permeability mode and sound profile, which will be activated depending on the user’s location data received from the smartphone.

The coverage area is set quite simply and flexibly: with the help of a circle on the maps used by the smartphone by default. It doesn’t work perfectly, but the headphones do switch their parameters on their own, so the manufacturer only needs to improve the speed of response and map accuracy.

Noise reduction and microphones

Noise reduction works perfectly — it has always been at a high level in top Sennheiser models, and this year’s update is no exception. The transparency mode is still not up to par with Apple devices, but it is generally well implemented.

The quality of the earbuds is also at the usual level for the model, and for high-quality TWS in general: the voice is clear and the headphones cut off most of the ambient noise. They are quite enough for use in everyday life, but for more professional tasks or daily long conversations, it is better to consider a solution with an emphasis on the sound of the microphones

Autonomy of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4

In noise-canceling mode and with the maximum sound quality settings, the headphones last 6–7 hours on a single charge. The case provides about 3-4 more full charges, which means that Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 can be used for a week on a single charge, with not too much use. The headphones support wireless charging and are fully charged in about an hour and a half.

Technologies and features

New flagship with AptX Lossless and Adaptive ANC 

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 with Qualcomm S5 Sound Gen 2 and Snapdragon Sound technology guarantees stable, low-latency wireless connectivity and the highest quality aptX audio playback. The new chip provides support for aptX Lossless, a Bluetooth codec that can transmit lossless audio at 16-bit resolution.

Bluetooth 5.4

The headphones have a Bluetooth 5.4 module, support Auracast technology (broadcasting a signal to all compatible Bluetooth devices within range), and have a new, more advanced antenna.

Noise reduction

Momentum True Wireless 4 received an improved adaptive active noise cancellation system and more powerful batteries, which positively affected the energy efficiency and quality of ANC operation.

Improved microphones

To improve call quality, Sennheiser uses an array of six microphones and a new AI-based voice processing algorithm that should help keep the voice separate from background sounds.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 sound

The sound of Sennheiser’s new TWS flagships is quite unusual when compared to previous versions: it has become more V-shaped, meaning that the emphasis is on the transmission of low and high frequencies. The upper frequencies are detailed and intelligible, with well-developed ultra-highs, which is rare for most dynamic radiators in in-channel models. Middle frequencies are not as intelligible as we would like, but in general, the sound is emotional and rich — on calm compositions the transmission of instruments is natural and informative.

Low frequencies are voluminous and with a good level of detail. On some tracks, there is an excessive amount of bass, which is noticeable in rock and electronic music, but it has a positive effect on genres such as pop and rap.

The headphones are unpretentious in terms of genre: Momentum True Wireless 4 do a good job with not oversaturated recordings, but they don’t pull out symphony orchestra and metal.

The main testing was carried out on Apple iPhone 15 Pro, Google Pixel 7, and Apple MacBook Air M1 laptops using Spotify and Apple Music streaming services.

Price and competitors

Cost Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 is 12 899 UAH.In the same price category, there are interesting models like Sony WF-1000XM5 for 12 499 UAH, Astell&Kern AK UW100MKII for 11 990 UAH
