Elon Musk’s gaming PC: a huge display and a budget video card

Recently, Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and chief efficiency officer, has become the richest man in the world installed a gaming PC in the DOGE office. At the time, there was no information about the system’s configuration. But now, tech reporter Kate Conger of the New York Times has shared an image of what appears to be a rather unbalanced build, albeit with flickering RGB lighting.

So, Elon Musk will be solving important government issues to increase efficiency behind a display 49-inch curved monitor Samsung Odyssey G9 with a resolution of 5120×1440 pixels. Up close, you can see that the system unit is equipped with a compact MSI discrete graphics card, which is most likely an RTX 4060 or 4070 model. Yes, a model of the last generation, which is usually used in budget builds.

The preparations meant Musk could hit the ground running on Jan. 20. Lately, he's been working from the Secretary of War Suite in the Eisenhower Building, where he's installed a gaming PC. Here's what the setup looks like:

So, we have a budget video card that should handle more than 7.3 million pixels of the Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor. This is about the same as putting a lawnmower engine in a sports muscle car and hoping that it will provide a sharp start at the traffic light and win the race.

Not that we want to throw stones at the RTX 4060 or 4070 – these cards are actually quite good choices (at the right price), especially considering the recent reviews of the RTX 50 series. But still – Musk, the man who sends rockets into space and holds the title of the world’s richest man. Couldn’t he afford something more powerful? And how effective is it to use such a video card with such a monitor?

Maybe Musk plays in windowed mode? Maybe half of his screen is occupied by the game, and the other half by broadcasts with DOGE operations? This option reduces the load on the video card, and then the RTX 4060 no longer seems like such a bad idea. Besides, Musk is known for his love of less demanding games, such as Diablo IV and Path of Exile 2. But on the other hand, it is known that he has at least tried Cyberpunk 2077, which can melt even more powerful GPUs on ultra settings. In general, why does Musk need a powerful gaming computer if he doesn’t care? other people play for him and level up his characters?

So, the question remains: is Musk really a gamer, or is it just a marketing ploy?
