A terrible accident in Toronto involving a Tesla Model Y resulted in the deaths of four passengers after ramming into a road pole — the driver survived only because a passerby broke the window and helped her leave the burning car.
Later, rescuer Rick Harper said that the electronic doors of the Tesla Model Y were blocked and actually left the passengers in a fire trap
«The driver tried desperately to get out by opening the door from the inside. I don’t know what the problem was, the battery or something else, but she couldn’t», — says Harper, noting that the smoke was so thick that it made it impossible to see if anyone else was inside.
According to the police, the accident occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing the car to ram into a pole and catch fire. The investigation is currently ongoing, but the details that the cops have so far require us to think about the safety of electronic doors in Tesla and other electric vehicles that require electricity to open. According to Futurism, not all Tesla vehicles are equipped with manual rear door unlocking, and it is not yet known whether the car involved in the accident had such a function.
At the same time, this is not the first time that passengers have died after being trapped in a Tesla door (no one blames the drivers for causing the accident): in 2019, a father of many children was burned alive in a Model S after the car’s door handles failed to work, his family claimed in a lawsuit which prevented passersby from rescuing him from the fire. Another driver almost suffered the same fate in 2021 when his Tesla Model S caught fire: he briefly stuck inside due to a malfunction of the car door handles but eventually managed to escape.
