20 years ago, the world met Kratos — for this «round» date, Sony Santa Monica is preparing pleasant surprises for fans.
The ruthless Spartan warrior has become one of the most famous PlayStation series. Therefore, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise, the developers will release a free God of War Ragnarök update, a large-scale art exhibition, a line of anniversary merchandise, and a big sale of franchise games. But everything will be done one by one.
What’s new in the update Ragnarök?
The Dark Odyssey update adds a whole collection of cosmetic items to the game. The main novelty is the Dark Odyssey armor for Kratos, which refers to the era of God of War 2 (2007). This set will include:
- Dark Odyssey Kratos look: black and gold look with glowing eyes, which repeats the iconic skin from the second part of the series
- Dark Odyssey armor: cuirass, armor and belt in the style of classic Kratos
- Cosmetic changes to weapons: updated skins for Leviathan’s Axe, Chaos Blades, and Spear
- Draupnir (with unique nozzles)
- Shield skins: external changes for all shields, including Spartan Aspis, Dauntless Shield, Shatter Start Shield, etc
- New outfits for your partners: Atreus will receive a Dark Odyssey costume and Freya will wear a Witch’s Dark Odyssey dress
The update will be available for free to all owners of the game on PS5, PS4 and PC.
The celebration continues: exhibition, sale and unique products
Sony is preparing a few more surprises, but one of them will take place only in the United States. Namely, in partnership with Gallery Nucleus, they will organize an art exhibition dedicated to the artistic heritage of God of War. It will feature unique artworks from former and current Santa Monica Studio developers, concept art from the games, and exclusive exhibits.
The franchise sale will last until March 20. Until Thursday inclusive, you can buy God of War games at discounted prices:

- T-shirts with the symbols of the series
- A giant 67-centimeter plush Jormungand, which can be used as a puppet with a magnetic Leviathan’s axe in the snake’s mouth
Despite the celebrations, Santa Monica Studio is not stopping: according to rumors, the team is working on a prequel to the story of Kratos that could unfold in Greece. Earlier, another insider said that Sony is casting actors from the Middle East for an unknown AAA game and suggested that the game could be in the Egyptian setting.
